What is ADD/ADHD?

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a form of neurological disorder that is mainly characterized by lack of attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, coupled with physical manifestations such as fidgeting, squirming, talking excessively, tapping, and constant movement. Parents are starting to detect symptoms as early as six or seven and sometimes earlier.

Among the most common signs of ADHD parents observe: impatience, constantly interrupting others, having frequent and sudden outbursts, not being able to accomplish tasks, lack of focus, inability to play quietly, aversion to tasks that require extended mental effort, forgetfulness, to name a few. If children have been showing six or more of these symptoms, over a six-month period, they are usually diagnosed with ADD. The challenge with ADD/ADHD training approach is the diagnosing professional often gives vague recommendation to help the individual compensate. This is where Brain Sprints comes in. Our ADD/ADHD training approach is to find the root cause of the symptoms, stimulate the brain at the root and see the new brain pathways provide better function for the individual. What is ADD?

Attention deficit disorder or ADD is similar to ADHD minus the constant movement or hyperactivity. In fact, this type of neurological disorder is harder to detect since most children with ADD are generally not disruptive in school and may simply be mistaken as constantly daydreaming. Although they will not give voice to their difficulty in accomplishing schoolwork, following instructions, and socializing with classmates, children with ADD are most likely silently struggling on their own.

Trouble paying attention, aversion to long mental tasks, forgetfulness, losing things often, making careless mistakes, disorganization, and lack of eye contact are the most common symptoms of ADD. A child is diagnosed with ADD if he is showing six or more of these symptoms in addition to low activity levels within a six month period. Many physicians recommend the use of medication to treat ADD and ADHD. The problem is, that by definition, all prescriptions have side effects and the jury is still out on the long term effects on a person’s life that was given these medications early in life.

Three types of ADD include:

A Predominantly Inattentive ADHD label is often given when the child is constantly distracted, not listening, and forgetful, not paying attention to detail, quickly loses interest in something, has trouble following and/or understanding instructions, avoiding tasks that require focus or more mental effort, and more.

A Predominantly Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD label is given when the child has less of the inattentive symptoms and manifests more hyperactive cues, such as fidgeting, squirming, interrupting people when they talk, constantly moving, difficulty in playing quietly, running and climbing at inappropriate times, blurting out words, to name a few.

Combination ADHD is when the child exhibits both inattentive and hyper-impulsive symptoms.

Why Brain Sprints?

Brain Sprints takes pride in the 25+ years we have spent developing, and consistently innovating the NeuroDevelopmental Approach for training children with ADD/ADHD and other learning disabilities. We are one of the very few companies in Texas to offer this type of customized service. We stand out even more because of our high level of dedication to help every child, regardless of their disability and struggles. That is why families come from all over the United States to receive services.

The unique nature of Brain Sprints’ application of the NeuroDevelopmental Approach is that we take into consideration the whole child through the areas of sensory input (auditory, visual and tactile) and motor output (gross motor, fine motor and language). The child is evaluated in these 6 areas and tracked through 9 levels of development. An individualized brain training program is then crafted from our 1,000+ activity database. Instead of focusing on labels and limiting your child’s potential based on what a ADD/ADHD dictates, we look at your child as an individual who has boundless potentials and untapped skills and talents. It is our job to help you and your child discover this way to a brighter future.

FAQ

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • Do you conduct a NeuroDevelopmental screening or in-person evalution before beginning the ADD/ ADHD NeuroDevelopmental Brain Training?

A NeuroDevelopmental screening or an in-depth NeuroDevelopmental evaluation is recommended to uncover the root causes of inefficiencies leading to the child’s diagnoses of ADD/AHD. In contrast, schools and educational institutions in the United States have a set of guidelines in professionally diagnosing ADD/ADHD through psychological evaluation and checklists. In our view, understanding the cause of the struggle and addressing that with a customized action plan is much more effective than just labeling and modifying.

  • Do you use prescription drugs for ADHD and ADD treatments?

What we have wittnessed is that the root causes of ADHD and ADD symptoms can be targeted, addressed, and eliminated or significantly reduced without the use of medication. Do not get us wrong, we recognize that certain children have hormonal, emotional or chemical imbalances that do require prescription drugs. However, when it comes to addressing attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, the long-term solution lies in eliminating root causes through NeuroDevelopmental Brain Training.

  • Do I have to bring my child to a certain location to get this NeuroDevelopmental intervention?

We do have services that our trained Brain Coaches provide at our Denton center for those families in the DFW area but we also service families all over the world through our in-home programs.  This is made possible by the internet and the training for all the activities being available through a customized portal for each child’s specific plan. This training allows parent to be successful at implementing the brain training program at home.

  • What materials will parents use when conducting in-home training?

The same materials inspired by the NeuroDevelopmental philosophy are used at our Brain Sprints Center or provided for home use. Our programs address the child from a global perspecitive and provide activities that are a mix of physical movement, fine motor, gross motor, tactile, auditory and visual activities in short manageable time frames.
